Hotel California

So a few months ago, I kept seeing these itty bitty gnat type bugs flying around my house. I was getting pissed when I realized that they were fruit flies.

Granted that I am a science geek I know that they live just about a week and get busy like crazy and can lay some weird number of eggs just shy of 1000. SERIOUSLY.

Anyway, so I am FREAKING out. So I research how to make a fruit fly trap and basically make this:

I know it is kind of hard to see due to the camera phone glare— but it is a bowl with 1/2 a glass of wine (damn bugs make me waste perfectly good wine) and a nectarine that is sliced. A sandwich bag is slide over the bowl and sealed. THEN tiny holes are poked into the bag.

The fruitflies can get in…but they can never leave. Yes, yes, they would congregate to the sweet smell of the fruity wine (who wouldn’t?) and enter the little tiny holes. Yes…yes, you little buggy beasts, Welcome to the Hotel California…You can check-out any time you like,But you can never leave!’

(And yes, I threw away the ENTIRE bowl when I was done. I did use the heart shaped Disney one hoping to make it enticing to those flies seeking romance.)I also found the source of the Great fruit fly infestations–My son ate a Nutrigrain bar and only consumed HALF so the flies found the OTHER half in his ROOM!

So, it worked? Cause I have a few of those buggers myself. Too many apples!

Jeez, I wish I would have know this a few months ago. I left a diaper bag in the van (I’m notorious for leaving stuff in the van, usually it’s innocent and not in the least bit disgusting) and forgot there was a banana in there. Have you ever seen the movie “The Sweetest Thing”? Yeah, that was me, only with fruit flies (and way less hot than Cameron Diaz) and I still shudder when I think about it. Gross.
