Yo Keats! Yo Poe! Looky Me!- Spin Cycle

Yes, I know that I had a poem last week and was trying to brown nose or something like that….but I figured I should still contribute to this week’s spin cycle. I think I may have posted this one for a Free Verse Friday a million years ago—who knows. I usually write them when the mood strikes and post on Fridays when I remember. And here I sit, in my classroom on a school holiday looking through my poems since I am not too awe inspired to write one at the moment. (the mall is calling my name after I finish my work) I have Foo Fighters cranked since I am the ONLY one in the building (feels a bit Breakfast Clubbish to me).

Too bad I don’t have a diet coke. I could use one right now.

Here is my poem for this week.

Lifetimes

It was a lifetime ago

Or maybe two

That we first met.

I didn’t need to introduce myself this time.

I already knew you.

I recognized your smile,

Your laugh,

Your touch.

You brushed my cheek,

With unsteady fingers,

And I knew that you

Remembered me too.

Your hair is different,

Then again, so is mine.

You are a little taller,

I am a little shorter,

The eyes I see you with are

Brighter.

My trust is immediate,

Because some other time

You had earned it,

Your promises kept,

Your secrets vaulted,

Your actions well meant.

I know your dreams

As well as I know my own.

I know your heart,

Your hurts,

Your wishes,

As much as you know mine.

I touch your cheek,

Softly,

Just like I did

The first time.

It was yesterday

Or maybe it was today,

That I look at you with shining eyes,

My throat aches,

My heart pounds,

And I know,

This is not the first time,

I have held my tears in

When we say goodbye.

It was a lifetime ago,

Or maybe it was today,

That I let you go.
